RUTA, civ. law. The name given to those things which are extracted or taken from land, as sand, chalk, coal, and such Other things. Poth. A blue semiprecious stone composed chiefly of a sulphur-containing silicate of sodium and aluminium; Hist. a pigment consisting of crushed grains of this, the original ultramarine; the colour ultramarine. Cf. LAPIS 2.
