1. <botany> A plant of the genus Hedera (H. Helix), common in Europe. Its leaves are evergreen, dark, smooth, shining, and mostly five-pointed; the flowers yellowish and small; the berries black or yellow. The stem clings to walls and trees by rootlike fibres. 2. <botany> An American woody creeper (Rhus Toxicodendron), with trifoliate leaves, and greenish-white berries. It is exceedingly poisonous to the touch for most persons. To pipe in an ivy leaf, to console one's self as best one can. West Indian ivy, a climbing plant of the genus Marcgravia.

Chicken Chow Mein (recipes)


Chicken Chow Mein

Yield: Makes 6 servings



Ingredients:



Fried Noodles (recipe follows)

3teaspoons cornstarch, divided

2-1/2tablespoons dry sherry, divided

2tablespoons soy sauce, divided

2whole boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch pieces

8ounces boneless lean pork, cut into 1-inch pieces

1/2cup water

2teaspoons instant chicken bouillon granules

2tablespoons vegetable oil

1piece fresh ginger (1 inch square), peeled and finely chopped

1clove garlic, minced

8ounces deveined shelled shrimp

2medium yellow onions, chopped

1red or green pepper, thinly sliced

2stalks celery, diagonally cut into 1-inch slices

8green onions with tops, chopped

4ounces cabbage (1/4 of small head), shredded









Preparation:





1.Prepare Fried Noodles; set aside.2.Combine 1 teaspoon cornstarch, 1/2 tablespoon sherry and 1/2 tablespoon soy sauce in large bowl. Add chicken and pork; toss to coat well. Cover and refrigerate 1 hour.3.Combine remaining 2 teaspoons cornstarch, water, 2 tablespoons sherry, 1-1/2 tablespoons soy sauce and bouillon granules in small bowl; set aside.4.Heat oil in wok or large skillet over high heat. Add ginger and garlic; stir-fry 1 minute. Add chicken and pork; stir-fry until no longer pink in center, about 5 minutes. Add shrimp; stir-fry until shrimp turn pink, about 3 minutes.5.Add Vegetables to wok; stir-fry until crisp-tender, 3 to 5 minutes. Add bouillon-soy sauce mixture. Cook and stir until sauce boils and thickens; cook and stir an additional minute.6.Arrange Fried Noodles on serving plate; top with chicken mixture.







Vermicelli

Yield: Makes about 4 servings



Ingredients:



8ounces Chinese rice vermicelli or bean threads

Vegetable oil for frying









Preparation:





1.Cut bundle of vermicelli in half. Gently pull each half apart into small bunches.2.Heat oil in wok or large skillet over medium-high heat to 375°F. Using slotted spoon or tongs, lower a small bunch of vermicelli into hot oil.3.Cook until vermicelli rises to top, 3 to 5 seconds; remove immediately. Drain vermicelli on paper towels. Repeat with remaining bunches.
