Ophthalmoscopy (medicine)

ophthalmoscopy
<procedure> Observation of the optic disc, retina and blood vessels. May be examined by direct or indirect ophthalmoscopy. In direct ophthalmoscopy the examiner uses an ophthalmoscope the size of a flashlight to shine a beam of light into your eye. In indirect ophthalmoscopy a head lamp device is used and a much brighter light. Visualisation of the retina is important in conditions such as glaucoma, diabetes, hypertension and conditions that cause increased intracranial pressure.
