Chaeronea (sh)




Ancient city, eastern Greece.

Its ruins are located in western Boeotia southeast of Mount Parnassus, near Orchomenus. Philip II of Macedon won the Battle of Chaeronea there in 338 BC. In 86 BC it was the scene of a victory of Sulla over Mithradates VI of Pontus. Plutarch was born there งใ AD 46.
