claustrum

1. One of several anatomical structures bearing a resemblance to a barrier.

2. A thin, vertically placed lamina of gray matter lying close to the putamen, from which it is separated by the external capsule. Claustrum consists of two parts: 1) an insular part and 2) a temporal part between putamen and the temporal lobe. Cells of the claustrum have reciprocal connections with sensory areas of the cerebral cortex.
