epiglottitis (medicine)

epiglottitis
<pathology> Inflammation of the epiglottis due to a bacterial (haemophilus influenza) infection.

This serious, life-threatening infection is more common in children 2 to 7 years of age. The illness is typically of abrupt onset with stridor, sore throat, breathing difficulty, drooling and a high fever. A whispery diminished voice is also common.

Treatment involves airway protection and intravenous antibiotics.
