A viral encephalitis caused by encephalitis viruses, all arboviruses. The severity of the encephalitis depends upon which virus strain causes the infection. The viruses are maintained by inapparent zoonoses in birds and lower vertebrates, and are transmitted to humans via arthropod vectors.
