<enzyme> An enzyme of the lyase class that catalyses the reaction of l-histidine to form urocanate and ammonia. The reaction is the initial step of histidine catabolism. Genetic deficiency of the enzyme, transmitted as an autosomal recessive trait, causes histidinaemia.
