A ridge which extends obliquely downward and medially across the back of the tibia from the fibular articular facet; it gives origin to the soleus muscle.

Put to death by nailing or otherwise fastening to a cross (an ancient mode of capital punishment, considered by the Greeks and Romans to be especially ignominious). ME.
Mortify, destroy the power of, (passions, sins, the flesh, etc.). ME.
Cause extreme mental or (now less commonly) physical pain to; torment; persecute. E17.
