oesophagitis candida
Infection of the oesophagus by the yeast-like fungus Candidal albicans. Usually occurs in the immunocompromised individual (AIDS). Oral thrush is a predisposing factor.

Symptoms include difficulty swallowing, pain on swallowing and oral lesions.

Diagnosis is made using UGI endoscopy. Treatment is with antifungal agents such as ketoconazole or fluconazole.

[Sanskrit O mai-padme hu lit. 'oh (goddess) Manipadma', reinterpreted as 'oh jewel in the lotus', from mai jewel, padma lotus. Cf. OM.]
(Used as) a mantra or auspicious formula in prayer and Meditation in Tibetan Buddhism.
