A class of neuroglial (macroglial) cells in the central nervous system. Oligodendroglia may be called interfascicular, perivascular, or perineuronal satellite cells according to their location. The most important recognised function of these cells is the formation of the insulating myelin sheaths of axons in the central nervous system.
