Chinese Huang Hai

Large inlet of the western Pacific Ocean, between northeastern China and the Korean peninsula.

Famous for its fishing grounds, it connects with the East China Sea on the south; the Shandong Peninsula extends into it from the west. It has an area of 180,000 sq mi (466,200 sq km) and a maximum depth of 338 ft (103 m). It derives its name from the color of the silt-laden water discharged into it by the Huang He (Yellow River) and Other major Chinese rivers, including the Yangtze (Chang) and Liao. Leading port cities include Shanghai and Tianjin in China, Inch'?n in South Korea, and Namp'o in North Korea.
