Leeward Islands (sh) and bungarotoxins (medicine)

Leeward Islands (sh)

Arc of West Indian islands that constitute the most westerly and northerly of the Lesser Antilles, northeastern Caribbean Sea.

The major islands are, from north to south, the Virgin Islands of the U.S. and the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, St. Martin, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat, and Guadeloupe. Just south of this chain is Dominica, sometimes classified as part of the Leeward Islands but usually designated as part of the Windward Islands.

bungarotoxins (medicine)

bungarotoxins
Neurotoxic proteins from the venom of the banded or formosan krait (bungarus multicinctus, an elapid snake).

Alpha-bungarotoxin blocks nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and has been used to isolate and study them; beta- and gamma-bungarotoxins act presynaptically causing acetylcholine release and depletion. Both alpha and beta forms have been characterised, the alpha being similar to the large, long or type II neurotoxins from Other elapid venoms.
